Bon Jovi is second to none when it comes to the '80s power ballad. This bad boy of rock started playing wicked hair metal, then transitioned into a more radio-friendly arena rock as the years progressed. He's grown older, but his music has only gotten better with time.

No shortcuts. No compromises. No BS. From their modest beginnings in New England's hardcore scene to their current status as one of the most influential and inspirational forces in modern music, Killswitch Engage have played by these three simple rules. With their new, fourth album, As Daylight Dies, KsE are proving that if you keep playing the game your way, you'll eventually change the rules for everyone else.

Killswitch Engage have been putting their stamp on the music world and inspiring bands for years. Bassist Mike D'Antonio is also a graphic artist, designing album covers, t-shirts and logos for bands, including All That Remains, Shadows Fall, Chimaira, Cannibal Corpse, and others. Singer Howard Jones manages a few up-and-coming bands such as 12 Tribes, Bury Your Dead and August Burns Red. Dutkiewicz's " other " job is that of a record producer. In addition to producing all four of KsE's albums, he recently produced Underoath's Define the Great Line as well as albums from the likes of Unearth and Every Time I Die. "I definitely see these side gigs as a situation where we're all sharing ideas," Dutkiewicz explains. "Personally, I get inspired by a lot of the bands I work with, and they get inspired by me barking orders at them." He laughs. "Seriously, though, I'm influenced by anything I hear as musical - to me, a broken car muffler can be as inspirational as a great band, as long as it's got a sick rhythm."

"We're an electronic band," affirms Amit "Duvdev" Duvedevani, singer and co-founder of the Israel-bred, Los Angeles-based psy-trance duo Infected Mushroom, "but when we became a full live band onstage, the reaction was so powerful that we knew we were inventing something new."

The dynamic, shaven-headed Duvdev and his flowing-haired partner, Erez Eisen, have been playing to increasingly massive, frenzied crowds all over the globe, thanks to an explosive live show that is a far cry from the staid stereotype of dance acts hunched over their computers.

With Duvdev bouncing all over the stage and exhorting the crowd to belt out the lyrics, Erez virtually dancing with his keyboards, tour guitarist Tommy Cunningham (or, ..ed dates, Israeli axemaster Erez Netz) firing off metallic riffs and Brazilian drummer Rogerio Jardim boosting the Mushroom's programmed beats with propulsive polyrhythms, the band has whipped audiences worldwide to a fine froth.

Formed by guitarist Michael Amott after his departure from the now legendary Carcass, ARCH ENEMY first garnered praise with the metal milestones Black Earth (1997), Stigmata (1998) and Burning Bridges (1999). These albums were propelled by flawlessly technical dual guitars and a previously unheard of mixture of melody and aggression, which helped them to quickly solidify their reputation as one of the genres elite.

Founding guitarist and songwriter Michael Amott describes his thoughts on the groups highly anticipated new album: I think all great metal needs that killer mix of classic riffs and ripping solos, something that has been a bit of a dying art recently. We are doing our best to recreate that mix on this new album, and one thing I can guarantee is that there will be tons of guitar for fans to headbang to. All in all, I am really happy with the songs and I believe we have found the right balance of melody and brutality - the Arch Enemy trademark!

The phenomenon known as Sublime, arguably the most energetic, original and uniquely eclectic band to emerge from any scene, anywhere, ended with the death of lead singer, guitarist and songwriter Brad Nowell in May of 1996. But encompassing the sense of place and purpose long associated with Sublime's music, Badfish, a Tribute to Sublime seem to be channeling the spirit of their predecessors with a fury not felt for some time. What separates Badfish from other tribute bands is that they have replicated Sublime's essence, developing a scene and dedicated following most commonly reserved for label-driven, mainstream acts.

Produced in parts by the duo of Fountain of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger & Girls vs Boys' Eli Janney, and by pop-rock legend Ric Ocasek, Even If It Kills Me is a heartfelt examination of the human condition, at turns both comic and tragic. Contagiously clever, buoyantly catchy, and featuring the instantly memorable single "This Is For Real," Even If It Kills Me is the year's most anticipated record.

Theory of a Deadman had a simple but daunting goal for its third album: to make the greatest record possible.

"I always try to remind the guys and myself that there are 20 bands lined up behind us just waiting for a chance to take our place," says frontman Tyler Connolly. "So that means we had to go in there and make a great record." With Scars & Souvenirs, the Vancouver trio has hit its mark.

The balanced 13-track effort is the polished and passionate testament to seven years of hard work, heavy touring and diligent attention to its craft. From the swirling grind of "By the Way" to the nasty snarl of "Crutch" to the soaring melodicism of "Not Meant to Be" and "Wait For Me," Scars & Souvenirs is a broad-reaching endeavor that puts Connolly, guitarist Dave Brenner and bassist Dean Back high in the rock pantheon, achieving creative growth without sacrificing the hard-hitting power that got them here in the first place.

Alpha, the sixth and newest album from Sevendust, marks a return to the band's origins and a welcome sonic assault to their legions of followers. Crammed into the same rehearsal/writing room which spawned their ground-breaking 1997 debut, Sevendust found themselves right where it all started in their hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. Recorded at Tree Sound Studios with long time friend and co-producer/engineer Shawn Grove, Alpha was born.

Indeed conceptual in nature, Alpha explores the recesses of the mind and the torturous conflict within the question: Can I possibly continue along this path?

Gone are the acoustic guitars and overt electronic inflection of the last couple of records as the band returns to a raw, uncompromising complexity reminiscent of the Home years.

There in the humble beginnings and stomping grounds where it all began, the band brewed up twelve brutal tracks blending a new innovative crunch with that infamous, ferocious throat.

From the blood-curdling vocal introduction of the first track, Deathstar, the listener knows it's old school Sevendust on a collision course with a fresh burning desire to obliterate, even if the victim may come from within.

A metal band with an alternative-rock edge, Alice in Chains was among the biggest to emerge from the grunge scene that spawned Nirvana, Pearl Jam, and Soundgarden. The group's dark, bitter songs, laden with references to drug addiction and death, occupy a musical landscape somewhere between Metallica's dense head bangers and Pearl Jam's grinding anthems.

The band's electrifying set list will spotlight classic hits and new favorites, including new single "Your Decision," which impacts radio on December 7th. The band recently shot a video for the song with director Stephen Schuster, who they previously worked with on the video for "A Looking In View."

"Three-Way," the opening song on Distortion, introduces, in a deceptively exuberant blast of pop noise, the themes and obsessions of Magnetic Fields' eighth album. The lyrics simply consist of gleefully repeated exclamations, by male and female voices, of the song title. While "Three-Way" may summon images of Twister-like physical exertions in a situation where three is not a crowd, the subsequent material describes scenarios in which desire itself is twisted into dark, alluring shapes and love remains tantalizingly unrequited. Using a modest number of instruments, composer and producer Stephin Merritt creates a veritable wall of sound. He employs no synthesizers; instead, he generates waves of feedback that envelop every track like a spiky black gift-wrapping.
